Sunset View
Project Overview
Set high above the storied Sunset Strip, just beyond the iconic silhouette of the Chateau Marmont, this contemporary residence is conceived as both retreat and performance space—an architectural expression of discipline, precision, and ritual drawn from an unexpected source: baseball.
The path of a baseball bat through three-dimensional space is never a simple arc, but a complex, accelerating spiral governed by rotation, translation, and timing. Driven by the hitter’s body turning around a vertical axis—typically centered through the spine—the swing unfolds as a coordinated kinetic sequence, while the hands guide the bat along a subtly inclined, continuously shifting plane.
In a similar register, the home organizes itself around a central core, with forms that appear to wrap and release in response to that same sense of controlled acceleration. Upper-level fins extend outward in calibrated rotation, expressing the building’s own layered dynamism—an architectural echo of the bat’s accelerating sweep through space.
